Marston Moretaine Megalith Stone "The Devils Jump"

The stone that sits in the Marston Moretaine Millennium park known as "The Devils Jump" must be the only  ancient stone in Bedfordshire, England. I recently found it after living in the village for over 6 years and I couldn't really pin point it. The stone stands around 29 inches out of the ground and aprox 16 inches in diameter and if observed from the top is actually in a octagonal shape. Ancient rumours had it that there once were three of these stones which are supposed to be three farms who were playing leap frog on a holy day and the devil decided to jump over them and turn them to stone to teach them a lesson.

The St Mary's church, Marston Moretaine which is approximately 2000 feet away from the standing stone has a Saxon tower some 40 feet separate to the main naive and chancel of the church which was meant to have been moved by the devil himself. It is unclear whether the devil moved the tower and made the men into stone on the same day. The tower building looks a lot older than the main church and resembles that of the 11th centary Elstow Abbey 6 miles away. In ancient times St Mary's was a refuge for villagers during troubled times such as Viking raiders coming up the river Ouse. Marston Moretaine was listed in the Domes Day book and after a recent housing development on the East side of the village an excavation found a iron age settlement. This settlement is approximately 3000 feet away from the Devils Jump Stone. How old is the stone? did the iron age settlement have anything to do with the stone? nobody knows.

Here are a few pictures of the Devil's Jump Stone:

Locals have several legends about the Devil's Stone. The first talks about the devil made a bet with God. The devil wanted to gain control over mankind and God persuaded to make a bet with him to achieve his goal.

  2. So in effect, God used persecution to get them to disperse. They needed a little push to get out and spread the news about Christ. Yes they were spreading the news in Jerusalem, but they really were not separating themselves at this time.
