New server room air conditioning system for Saga Healthcare

New server room air conditioning system for Saga Healthcare Stafford

Orion air conditioning is has completed the installation of a server room air conditioning system for Saga Healthcare in Stafford. The new server room was for the expansion of the companies ongoing quality services for the over 50's. The state of the art server room had a humidification system and high quality Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning system to maintain temperature and humidity levels. All pipe services were run on the sides of the room to avoid any case of water leaks on to important equipment.
Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning units are renowned for long reliable life span and are ideal for server rooms and Com's rooms were a failure can mean the complete shut down of an entire business or at worst server damage. The new units are energy efficient inverter systems which have a high COP and modulated inverter compressor which can save up to 40% on server room air conditioning that can run 24 hours / 7 days a week. On a recent installation powered off a UPS system, existing fixed speed (non inverter) server room air conditioning systems were using 35% of the UPS rated power output. When new inverter systems were installed the power being used was 7%. Inverters have a massive energy saving potential.
Pictures of the project:

What air conditioning units were installed at Saga Healthcare Stafford:

6 x  Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning Power Inverter Mr Slim PKA-RP100KAL (10kW / 33000 Btu) which provided enough cooling for the 85 meter square area, 8  server racks and  2 100KVA UPS systems within the server room with spare cooling capacity in case of failures and future expansion. With all wall air conditioning units instead of ceiling cassette air conditioning was a safer option because when air conditioning unit fails they tend to leak water. If the water leaks out of a ceiling cassette it can drip into the top of important server equipment, with wall air conditioning units this limits the leakage to the sides of the room. These Mitsubishi PKA-RP100KAL can be found worldwide and have a amazing COP (3.61 x initial electrical input) which means that every 1000w of electrical energy going in produces 3610 watts of cooling.
For more information on air conditioning suitability for server rooms visit our advice page.

Server room air conditioning efficiency and CO2 emissions:

This air conditioning system, because oversized for the area meant we had spare capacity in case of any failure on any of the systems. The clients servers held critical medical data relating patients so could never fail. The bonus of the extra capacity was that the systems ticked over at sub 50% capacity and the outdoor inverter units slowed down because the temperature had been reached, therefore just pumping small amounts of cooling energy in to maintain the server room. The energy saving was phenomenal and CO2 emissions significantly improved.

Why use a Vapac humidifier for your Server room:

The Vapac humidifier is another world renowned product for reliable and safe production of humidity for server rooms, this is ideal when air conditioning is being used as it counter acts  the drying affect air conditioning tends to have on a area. The Vapac unit can be controlled by a humidistat which gives you the option of setting the actual humidity percentage for a particular application. For server rooms there are two reasons why you should have humidity control. Firstly ASHRAE’s "Design Considerations for Data and Communications Equipment Centres" recommends relative humidity conditions between 40% and 55%, with an allowable level between 20% and 80%. If a server room has a very low humidity the chance of static can rise to problem levels even with earth strips installed. Secondly if the server room is habitated by personnel the affect of dry air sub 20% is detrimental to health, skin and eyes.
Power / Heat-Loss Summery:
Server room efficiency: 85% approximately
Total power of servers: 80000 Watts
Total heat loss: 6550 Watts@85% +/-
Room in Square Meters: 10625 Watts
Total Heat Load: 17175 Watts
Key points to think about when getting air conditioning for server rooms:
  • Use inverter air conditioning as it will save energy in the long run.
  • Always follow the ASHRAE’s Design considerations for data and communications equipment centres guidelines towards humidity
  • Cheap air conditioning units do not work in cold weather because they do not have a outside fan speed controller (low ambient kit)
  • Use a established brand so if a part fails on you Server room air conditioning you are not waiting 8 weeks for a spare part.
  • Sometimes it is worth having two server room air conditioning units because if one fails you still have some cooling.
  • To establish the heat load of you servers add up all the power supplies of your servers rack and assume a 40% loss to heat. i.e- If you have 10 servers with 400watt power supply the total watts will be 4000 watts. assuming a 40% loss the heat load will be 1600 watts.
  • Work on a average watts per/Msq of 125watts, so if you server room is 5 x 5 meters you will require a base of 3.5kw/12000btu + the heat load.
  • Advised manufactures for server room air conditioning Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu and Lg
  • Always use auto-restart units for server room air conditioning units as power failures can shut budget air conditioning down.
  • If your server room is temporary (ie short term lease on building) or has building restrictions then portable air conditioning maybe your only option.
  • If using portable air conditioning for your server room then make sure it recycles the water for better cooling performance of that it has a integral condensate pump.
  • Use a established business who will not be going out of business for your server room air conditioning installation as the warranty of the air conditioning is with the supplier not the manufacturer.

The ceiling cassette air conditioning unit is frequently used in Commercial Air Conditioning solutions

CEILING CASSETTE AIR CONDITIONING

Ceiling Cassette Air Conditioning Unit Example

The Fujitsu ceiling cassette air conditioning unit is frequently used in Commercial Air Conditioning solutions. There are two types of ceiling Unit Ceiling Cassette or Ceiling Suspended.

Ceiling cassette units are fixed from the roof above a ceiling void and the four way fascia is the only part of the unit you see.

Ceiling suspended units are suspended below the ceiling.

Ceiling Cassette Units are a modern, space saving design which makes them an ideal choice for offices and retail solutions where floor or wall space is at a premium. Ceiling cassette units usually take longer to install than a wall mounted unit and are slightly more expensive to buy but have the advantage of distributing the air in 4 directions, giving better coverage and a more gentle air flow in addition to being very quiet whilst operational. These systems are operated via a keypad remote or wall mounted control panels.

All our air conditioning systems have a heat pump option in addition to their standard air conditioning feature. New technologies mean that these units are extremely quiet when running and have improved energy savings.

These units come with one outdoor condensing unit, known as a single split system and thanks to the flexibility of air conditioning systems, you can choose to run a number of units off of a single outdoor unit, which is known as a multi split. An larger version of this is a VRV/VRF air conditioning system which is commonly used in industrial facilities.

Altherma is the commercial name given to the Daikin air source air-to-water heat pump system. The Daikin Altherma system is designed to replace conventional fossil fuel boilers (Gas/LPG/Oil/direct electric) to providing 3-5 times more energy efficient heating and hot water to family homes. For use with vented and unvented systems.
The Daikin Altherma is ideal for home and small commercial applications. The system comprises of a outdoor heat-pump which collects the heat from the outside air and transfers it to the indoor heat exchanger. Highly efficient and adaptable the Daikin Altherma will save money and CO2.

The Daikin Altherma can be easily intergrated with a solar collector which is positioned south facing on the outside of the building for heating the domestic hot water. There is no specific panel required by Altherma which makes it adptable for use with most solar collectors. The sun can provide 30 to 70% of the energy required for our hot water needs.

With space and water heating representing 85% of UK residential energy consumption, replacing conventional central heating boilers with Daikin Altherma air to water heat pumps is the single largest contribution householders can make towards reducing carbon emissions.

Even at a temperature of -20°C, Altherma can still generate heat. At these extreme conditions the Daikin Altherma can supply additional heat by means of an electrical back-up heater. On an annual basis, the heat pump itself will still supply 90 to 95% of your heating requirements.

Domestic hot water tank

The water inside the storage tank is primarily warmed up by thermal energy from the outside air, thanks to a heat exchanger connected to the heat pump. An additional electrical heating element in the domestic water tank can take care of extra heat required in the shower, tub or sink. At necessary intervals the water is automatically heated to 70°C to prevent bacteria growth.

EKHBH016AB (Indoor Boiler Unit). With Daikin Altherma you can enjoy delightfully warm and perfectly safe water at all times. Depending on your daily consumption of hot water, Altherma domestic hot water tanks are available in three different sizes, with the largest one being the most efficient. These sizes are 150 ltr, 200 ltr and 300 ltr which can be selcted at the top of this page.

Solar Collector (optional)

EKUHWB2WB Solar Installation Accessory Kit.

In combination with solar collectors, Daikin Altherma uses thermal energy from the sun, which will keep up its good work for another five billion years, for heating the domestic hot water. The sun can provide 30 to 70% of the energy required for our hot water needs. The EKUHWB2WB installation kit is what is required when connecting a solar collector to the system

Intelligent temperature regulator (optional)
The system can be combined with additional temperature regulating systems with separate thermostats for every single room. Both wired and wireless models of easy-to-use thermostats with extensive possibilities are available from Daikin.

The outdoor units

Altherma uses a natural source of energy. The outdoor unit extracts heat from the outside air and raises its temperature to a level high enough to supply heating

How does it work?
The Daikin Altherma heat pump system extracts low grade thermal energy (at ambient temperature) from the environment (heat freely available in outside air), upgrades the heat to a higher temperature and releases it into the water running through your central heating system with low temperature radiators, under floor heating system or fan coil units.

Daikin air conditioning VRVQ system installed earlier this year to replace the existing older VRV system

Despite the challenging business conditions of the past two years, Space Air has remained committed to taking all reasonable steps to reduce the environmental impact of its commercial activities. The ISO 14001 Standard forms an important part of Space Air's objectives and so the Directors were delighted when the annual external audit approved certificate renewal with a highly complimentary report on the management of the system and environmental targets achieved to date, the auditor concluding with "This is one of the best environmental systems I have audited".

Perhaps the most impressive achievement was energy efficiency improvements recorded for the Daikin VRVQ air conditioning system installed earlier this year to replace the existing older VRV system.
Detailed metered records indicating minutes run and kW/hrs consumed by the new VRVQ system were compared with corresponding periods in previous years for the original system and showed a remarkable average 28.6% reduction in monthly kW/hr consumption!

A Space Air spokesman commented, "In addition to various other measures we have undertaken to reduce our environmental impact, the external auditor was particularly impressed by the very significant energy savings achieved by the VRVQ system. Although we need to look at a full year of recordings to get a fair comparison, the results so far are extremely encouraging, not only in terms of meeting our own objectives but also in reinforcing the efficiency benefits of VRVQ for the many customers considering replacing existing R22 or R407C VRV systems.

VRVQ has specifically been designed to enable older VRV systems to be replaced without the need to renew the existing pipework and in some cases, retain the existing fan coil units. VRVQ can therefore be installed relatively quickly, at considerably reduced cost and site disruption. The additional benefit is substantially lower running costs. We are already reaping the rewards and our customers can do the same."

Daikin, air, conditioning, VRVQ, system, installed, year, replace, existing, older, VRV,system

Daikin Air Conditioning first VRVQ system delivered to the UK was installed in the Guildford offices of Space Airconditioning plc

The very first VRVQ system delivered to the UK was installed in the Guildford offices of SpaceAirconditioning plc, Daikin distributors since 1980.

Daikin's unique VRVQ system has been specifically developed to replace the outdoor and indoor units of similar systems, originally designed to operate with HCFC R22 (or HFC R407C) refrigerant - without the need to replace the interconnecting pipe work!

Traces of old refrigerant and oil mixing with new refrigerants and oils can cause equipment malfunction. Typically, when upgrading to new equipment, it is recommended that all existing interconnecting pipe work be replaced at the same time as the outdoor and indoor units. This can be extremely costly and cause great disruption within the building.

Daikin developed new technology to capture and contain any contamination in the old pipe work, thus enabling new VRV outdoor and indoor units to be connected to existing pipe work, greatly simplifying the installation process.

Space Air ensured that the first VRVQ system available to the UK was earmarked to replace a VRV 'K Series' R407C system. In this example, the existing refrigerant pipe work and ceiling cassette fan coil units were retained. Only the outdoor condensing units and internal branch selector boxes were replaced. Commenting on the installation, Space Air's technical after sales manager, Sibat Butt said. "It is quite usual for new Daikin equipment to be installed in our own premises, but normally it would be destined for our training suite or a showroom. On this occasion, we chose to replace the system serving our main offices as the energy efficiency advantages satisfied one of our planned ISO 14001 objectives." Mr Butt continued. "The project was completed over one weekend and the only impact on the office staff was the temporary imposition of a few ceiling tiles being removed on Friday afternoon. By Monday morning the new VRVQ based system had been fully commissioned and was up and running, many staff being none the wiser that any change had taken place."

Daikin VRVQ affords all the operating and energy efficiency benefits of a completely new installation, at a fraction of the cost. Installation can be phased for added convenience and increased capacity can be achieved where required.

VRVQ is a must to consider if you are planning to upgrade your older VRV/VRF Air Conditioning system.

Hitachi air conditioning's solar-powered air conditioning system

HITACHI is the latest company to join the drive for solar-powered air conditioning. Hitachi group subsidiary Hitachi Plant Technologies Ltd has is reported to have developed a solar activated air conditioning system employing its own solar energy collector.

The system will be promoted for use in commercial buildings or district cooling facilities in the sunshine belts of the Mediterranean, the interior of North America, Western Asia, and Australia. The company is predicting sales of up to £40m by 2015.

Hitachi Plant Technologies has considerable experience in a wide range of plants employing solar energy for power and heating.

This system is designed to drive an absorption chiller directly with thermal energy generated from the solar energy collector to obtain chilled water for air conditioning. As the key to this system, Hitachi Plant Technologies developed its own sun-tracking parabola trough-type solar energy collector.

Blue Star, has announced the launch of a new range of eco-friendly and energy efficient Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Air conditioning System

Central air conditioning and commercial refrigeration major, Blue Star, has announced the launch of a new range of eco-friendly and energy efficient Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Airconditioning Systems using the Inverter technology.

A VRF system is a sophisticated centralized airconditioning system that cools large multi-zone spaces with varying heating and cooling needs through intelligent controls. This results in tremendous power savings as the system is smart enough to know where to cool, and when. Many modern establishments having multi zones such as sophisticated offices, hotels, premium residential properties and hospitals are opting for VRF Airconditioning systems because of the flexibility of control and significantly lower electricity billsIn VRF Airconditioning Systems, there are two popular technologies based on the compressor, namely Digital Scroll and Inverter. Blue Star has been offering VRF Airconditioning Systems with Digital Scroll technology since 2008. However, the Company realized that it is not addressing the needs of customers who prefer the Inverter technology. Considering that the VRF AC system segment is on a fast-growth path, the Company thought it prudent to launch VRF Systems with Inverter technology in addition to Digital Scrolls in order to address the entire universe of customers. Thus, with this new range of inverter-based systems, the Company will be able to offer both the technologies to its customers.
The new range of Inverter-based VRF Airconditioning Systems is being offered in partnership with Gree, China. Gree is China's leading airconditioning designer and manufacturer and has over 1000 installations of its VRF Inverter Airconditioning systems across the world. The units being offered are currently part of the latest fourth generation Inverter technology.

The new range being launched can support a wide range of 70 indoor units with up to 500 m of refrigerant piping, amongst the highest in its class. These units can operate in a wide range of 7oC to 48oC and offer both cooling and heating options. It boasts of intelligent microprocessor-based controllers at multi levels – an all encompassing centralized PC-controlled system for the entire installation; zone-wise control and individual unit control through the respective remotes. It incorporates the eco-friendly R410A refrigerant and offers tremendous energy savings thanks to its capacity variation in 1% steps from 10 to 100% of rating.

According to Mr B Thiagarajan, President, Airconditioning & Refrigeration Products Group, Blue Star Limited, “Blue Star is a market leader in the central airconditioning segment catering to both corporate as well as commercial requirements. With the launch of our Inverter-based VRF Airconditioning Systems, we now have the entire spectrum of VRF systems to cater to all customer demands and are in a position to further consolidate our leadership position in the central airconditioning business.”
