Saga Healthcare Server Room Air Conditioning and Humidity control

Server Room Air Conditioning and Humidity control at Saga Healthcare:

Orion air conditioning has completed the installation of a replacement server room air conditioning system for Saga Healthcare in Hatfield. The existing mix of cassette and wall mounted air conditioning units were R22 which is now banned for use in the UK and R407c which is banned for use in the UK from 2015. Because the units were old and fixed speed (either on or off according to the thermostat) the efficiency had dropped and the technology had become outmoded. The systems were at the end of their economical and safe life span.
Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning units are renowned for long reliable life span and are ideal for server rooms and Com's rooms were a failure can mean the complete shut down of an entire business or at worst server damage. The new units are energy efficient inverter systems which have a high COP and modulated inverter compressor which can save up to 40% on server room air conditioning that can run 24 hours / 7 days a week.

Pictures of the project:

What air conditioning units were installed at Saga Healthcare:

4 x  Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning Power Inverter Mr Slim PKA-RP100KAL (10kW / 33000 Btu) which provided enough cooling for the 15 meter square area and 6  server racks in the server room with spare cooling capacity in case of failures. The full replacement of the existing systems with all wall air conditioning units, instead of a mix of cassettes was a safer option because when air conditioning unit fails they tend to leak water. If the water leaks out of a cassette it can drip into the top of important server equipment, with wall units this limits the leakage to the sides of the room. These Mitsubishi PKA-RP100KAL can be found worldwide and have a amazing COP (3.61 x initial electrical input) which means that every 1000w of electrical energy going in produces 3610 watts of cooling.
For more information on air conditioning suitability for server rooms visit our advice page.

Server room air conditioning efficiency and CO2 emissions:

This air conditioning system, because oversized for the area meant we had spare capacity in case of any failure on any of the systems. The clients servers held critical medical data relating patients so could never fail. The bonus of the extra capacity was that the systems ticked over at sub 50% capacity and the outdoor inverter units slowed down because the temperature had been reached, therefore just pumping small amounts of cooling energy in to maintain the server room. The energy saving was phenomenal and CO2 emissions significantly improved.

Why use a Vapac humidifier for your Server room:

The Vapac humidifier is another world renowned product for reliable and safe production of humidity for server rooms, this is ideal when air conditioning is being used as it counter acts  the drying affect of air conditioning. The Vapac unit can be controlled by a humidistat which gives you the option of setting the actual humidity percentage for a particular application. For server rooms there are two reasons why you should have humidity control. Firstly ASHRAE’s "Design Considerations for Data and Communications Equipment Centres" recommends relative humidity conditions between 40% and 55%, with an allowable level between 20% and 80%. If a server room has a very low humidity the chance of static can rise to problem levels. Secondly if the server room is habitated by personnel the affect of dry air sub 20% is detrimental to health, skin and eyes.
Power / Heat-Loss Summery:
Server room efficiency: 85% approximately
Total power of servers: 20000 Watts
Total heat loss: 2550 Watts@85%
Room in Square Meters: 18750 Watts
Total Heat Load: 21300 Watts
Key points to think about when getting air conditioning for server rooms:
  • Use inverter air conditioning as it will save energy in the long run.
  • Always follow the ASHRAE’s Design considerations for data and communications equipment centres guidelines towards humidity
  • Cheap air conditioning units do not work in cold weather because they do not have a outside fan speed controller (low ambient kit)
  • Use a established brand so if a part fails on you Server room air conditioning you are not waiting 8 weeks for a spare part.
  • Sometimes it is worth having two server room air conditioning units because if one fails you still have some cooling.
  • To establish the heat load of you servers add up all the power supplies of your servers rack and assume a 40% loss to heat. i.e- If you have 10 servers with 400watt power supply the total watts will be 4000 watts. assuming a 40% loss the heat load will be 1600 watts.
  • Work on a average watts per/Msq of 125watts, so if you server room is 5 x 5 meters you will require a base of 3.5kw/12000btu + the heat load.
  • Advised manufactures for server room air conditioning Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu and Lg
  • Always use auto-restart units for server room air conditioning units as power failures can shut budget air conditioning down.
  • If your server room is temporary (ie short term lease on building) or has building restrictions then portable air conditioning maybe your only option.
  • If using portable air conditioning for your server room then make sure it recycles the water for better cooling performance of that it has a integral condensate pump.
  • Use a established business who will not be going out of business for your server room air conditioning installation as the warranty of the air conditioning is with the supplier not the manufacturer.

Dangerous server rooms without air conditioning

Server room air conditioning

It is advised when purchasing air conditioning units for server rooms to have energy efficient inverter systems. Generally server room air conditioning will run 24 hours / 7 days a week and the inverter will save energy and equipment failure. Generally cooling is only required but in the UK most air conditioning units are heat pumps which heat and cool. All server rooms and COMS equipment give off a lot of heat and need to be constantly cooled otherwise they could overheat and shut down causing major problems for businesses. Most fixed-speed air conditioning (non inverter) rarely come with a low ambient kit so if the temperature gets to cold outside then the indoor unit will not cool properly because the inside temperature is hotter than the outside, which is a common fault in UK winters. The cheaper air conditioning units also have issues with parts so if your unit breaks down the part required may take weeks to source. That's why it is worth buying up to date systems to future proof your server room cooling.

Key points to think about when getting air conditioning for server rooms

  • Use inverter air conditioning as it will save energy in the long run.

  • Cheap air conditioning units do not work in cold weather because they do not have a outside fan speed controller (low ambient kit)

  • Use a established brand so if a part fails on you Server room air conditioning you are not waiting 8 weeks for a part.

  • Advised manufactures for server room air conditioning Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, Sanyo.

  • Always use auto-restart units for server room air conditioning units as power failures can shut budget air conditioning down.

  • If your server room is temporary (ie short term lease on building) or has building restrictions then Portable / Mobile air conditioning maybe your only option.

  • If using portable air conditioning for your server room then make sure it recycles the water for better cooling performance of that it has a integral condensate pump.

  • Use a established business who will not be going out of business for your server room air conditioning installation as the warranty of the air conditioning is with the supplier not the manufacturer.

Server room air conditioning case study:

A server room air conditioning unit using a fixed speed air conditioning units for a server room air conditioning which was in need of re-newel. We advised using a Mitsubishi Heavy Industrial - SRK71ZE-S1 Wall Mounted (7.1kW 24000 Btu) hyper inverter wall air conditioning unit which is a hyper efficient with a cat A energy product label and designed for continual use which many server room air conditioning units require. The old fixed speed units used a lot of energy because of the start current associated with inductive loads with fixed speed air conditioning. The Mitsubishi Heavy Industrial - SRK71ZE-S1 Wall Mounted (7.1kW 24000 Btu) hyper inverter saved money in the long run and as it is designed for continual use will last.

Fujitsu Wall mounted air conditioning units are often used in Domestic Air Conditioning Systems and commercial server rooms

Fujitsu Wall mounted air conditioning units are often used in Domestic Air Conditioning Systems and commercial server rooms where space is limited or an area is otherwise difficult to keep cooled. The wall mounted air conditioning unit is the easiest to install and the cheapest to buy, resulting in the lowest priced installed air conditioner unit. These wall mounted air conditioning units are attached to the wall above head height and blow hot or cold air into a room from one louver. These Wall Mounted Air Conditioning Systems are operated via keypad remote controls or wall mounted control panels.

All our air conditioning systems have a heat pump option in addition to their standard air conditioning feature. New technologies mean that these units are extremely quiet when running and have improved energy savings.

These units come with one outdoor condensing unit, known as a single split system and thanks to the flexibility of air conditioning systems, you can choose to run a number of units off of a single outdoor unit, which is known as a multi split. An larger version of this is a VRV/VRF air conditioning system which is commonly used in industrial facilities.

Popular selling portable air conditioning units in the UK market

Portable air conditioning is usually used as a temporary way of cooling a event, ,server room, office or workplace. Generally they are cooling only but now they are being configured to go reverse cycle heat pump for markets such as Europe and the UK. Most use conventional fixed speed compressors with R407c or R410a refrigerant gas. The split type portable air conditioning system has a flexible umbilical pipe assembly which connects the inside part of the portable air conditioning unit with the outside unit. The outside part is usually the fan and condensing coil (heat exchanger) and is the hot side of the portable air conditioning system. These systems are effective but generally work out more expensive than mono-block portable air conditioning. The mono-block portable air conditioning unit is a stand alone portable system which has the condensing coil (heat exchanger) integral within the assembly of the unit but separate to the evaporator coil. This portable unit has a flexible duct usually 100mm to 125mm in diameter which expels the hot air to the outside of the building. These systems are a very popular portable air conditioning unit.

Air conditioning installation for television production ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!’ in Costa Rica, Central America

Case Study of Air conditioning installation for television production in Costa Rica, Central America (19/05/09).

Orion Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Ltd has completed a TV production air conditioning project for Elstree Lighting, Power and Rigging in Costa Rica, Central America. The installation was for the production, AV, Satellite uplink and control areas of the television program “ I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!’ which is a Granada USA Television production.
In total 16 x Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) were installed on the Asur hotel site which held the television production and which is situated within 2km from the base camp from where the production was being filmed. The rain forest conditions threw up some very challenging installation situations including high humidity which was near 90%. Great care was required when commissioning the air conditioning units due to the humidity and on average the units were vacuumed with heavy duty MASTERCOOL ROTARY VANE DEEP VACUUM PUMP 6.3 CFM for around 2 hours to avoid contamination. The humidity was particularly hard on the Condensate Pumps which were extracting 30 litres of moisture every hour in some areas and needed upgrading to the Aspen Maxi-Orange condensate pump which were more powerful and durable to cope with rain forest conditions.

Production Cabins:

In the production cabins 2 x Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) were installed to cope with a 30m squared area which had ambient temperatures of around 36 DegC and excessive humidity. When the units were finally commissioned the area was reduced in temperature to around 23 degC which was the set point. The Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) were pulling out 10 litres / hour of condensate which in the UK is unheard of!

AV Server Area:

The AV air conditioning server areas had up to 20 individual server racks which were all integral to the television production and needed to be specifically cooled to maintain correct operation. The AV air conditioning area had in total 10 individual Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) which were very effective in cooling this TV production area from a start temperature of 37 DegC. The area was required to run at 21 DegC and once the Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) had reached temperature they cycled on one or two of the units which kept the area adequately cooled. The condensate in this area was not such a problem as the units took moisture out of a sealed area.

Satellite Up-link Area:

This area had 2 x Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) systems which covered a area of around 15m square and had various equipment to deal with the live satellite up-link of the production ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!’ . This was beamed live to the Granada USA Television American offices for live television viewing around the world. The Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) were able to bring this production area down to 19 DegC.

Project Overview:

This project took 7 days to complete and the Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) units performed without a hitch. The high ambient temperatures were not a problem for the Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning for the production which is designed to run in 46 DegC. The systems are to be taken out of the production had finished for use on another TV production air conditioning project. The Mitsubishi Electric PSA-RP125GA Floor Inverter Air Conditioning (14 kW / 48000 Btu) were chosen for their powerful output and durability and so far have proven to be just that.
