Portable air conditioning is usually used as a temporary way of cooling a event, ,server room, office or workplace. Generally they are cooling only but now they are being configured to go reverse cycle heat pump for markets such as Europe and the UK. Most use conventional fixed speed compressors with R407c or R410a refrigerant gas. The split type portable air conditioning system has a flexible umbilical pipe assembly which connects the inside part of the portable air conditioning unit with the outside unit. The outside part is usually the fan and condensing coil (heat exchanger) and is the hot side of the portable air conditioning system. These systems are effective but generally work out more expensive than mono-block portable air conditioning. The mono-block portable air conditioning unit is a stand alone portable system which has the condensing coil (heat exchanger) integral within the assembly of the unit but separate to the evaporator coil. This portable unit has a flexible duct usually 100mm to 125mm in diameter which expels the hot air to the outside of the building. These systems are a very popular portable air conditioning unit.

There’s no better feeling than walking into an air conditioned building on a hot summer’s day. For this reason you will always find that air conditioned buildings are always more popular during warm weather as it enables people to feel more comfortable and provides people with a more comfortable environment to be in. There is more to it than this for businesses however, and these days it is no longer considered a luxury but a necessity for businesses to have air conditioning installed. So why is this and how does air conditioning work?

The term air conditioning can actually refer to any form of air cooling, heating, ventilation or disinfection that changes the condition of the air. However, the term air conditioning as it commonly used is the process of taking the warm air from a room which is then dehumidified and cooled via an air conditioning unit and pumped out as cool air until the room has reached the desired temperature. Air conditioning units can also be used to heat a room as well as cool it, and output cleaner air as a result of filters which take dust and impurities from the air.

Apart from the ability to apply climate control to a room and make conditions altogether more comfortable, there is overwhelming evidence that having air conditioning in the workplace increases worker productivity. This makes perfect sense if you think about it, how many of us just don’t feel like working if a room is too hot or too cold?

Scientific experiments have been performed on this very subject that show that above 22 degrees worker performance starts to drop, and then falls very sharply above 26 degrees. For this reason it is important for businesses to try and keep a constant temperature in the workplace and a temperature of around 20 degrees is thought to be the optimum in terms of worker performance.

In addition scientists have also proved that more accidents will occur in extreme temperatures and that mental performance drops sharply when it is too warm. It is also true that air conditioned shop, restaurant and bar will get more customers than their non air conditioned rivals. So you can see that introducing air conditioning into your workplace can not only keep your workers happy but also can have a positive effect on revenue too!

Case Study of Air conditioning Heat-pump installation at Autologic PLC Doncaster (21/12/10)

nstallation of Autologic PLC air conditioning heat-pumps :

Orion air conditioning & refrigeration ltd complete the installation of a Fujitsu VRF air conditioning heat-pump heating system for the 2 storey office building in Doncaster Yorkshire. Autologic Doncaster is a 1950's building made of a concrete structure with 14 areas which needed heating. The building had around 400 meters/Squared of area that used a oil fired convector heating system which was costing a great deal to maintain and was in need of replacing.

What air conditioning heat-pumps were installed in Autologic Doncaster:

8 x Fujitsu ASYA09-LG Wall Mounted Air conditioning (2.5Kw / 8500Btu) and 4 xFujitsu ASYA12-LG Wall Mounted Air conditioning (3.5Kw / 12000Btu) 6 x Fujistu AUYF12L Compact Cassette Air conditioning ( 3.5 kW / 12000 Btu) VRF Air Conditioning units running on 2 x AOY90MPBMF (31 kW / 100000 Btu) VRF Heat pump condensing unit which provided enough heat for the 14 areas on 2 floors within the building. These units have a high COP (3.65 initial input on) which means that every 1000w of electrical energy going in produces 3650 watts of heat. For more information on heat-pump inverters please here.

Background of the Autologic air conditioning heat-pumps:

Autologic were quoted on various heating systems including split heat pump systems and a replacement oil fired boiler which came in over budget in comparison to the price of the Fujitsu VRF air conditioning Heat-Pump units which where installed. The Fujitsu VRF air conditioning heat-pump system provided a great value way of heating a office building within a short space of time (30 mins heat up time) and with little cost and reduces CO2 emissions. A VRF air conditioning (variable refrigerant flow) system is one large capacity heat pump outdoor unit supplying multiple indoor units by regulating the flow of refrigerant to each unit to match desired capacity and heat load requirement. The Autologic Doncaster project 2 floor office required individual heating and cooling for each areas so a 3 pipe VRF system was required. The 3 pipe VRF air conditioning is also a heat recovery unit so all heat is collected from areas requiring cooling and distributed to areas requiring heating. This is particulay usefull if one side of the building is south facing and gets a lot of heat from the sun.

Heat-pump installation criteria:

This Autologic Office air conditioning heat-pump installation was undertaken by lead VRF air conditioning engineer Mr G Toth with assistance from installation engineer Craig Fogarty and Miles Taylor. All pipe and services were installed on the outside of the building on cush clamp pipe fittings at the back of the office building. The office air conditioning heat-pump units have a life span of around 15 to 25 years depending on their use. Installation time 20 days.

Office air conditioning VRF Heat-pump efficiency and CO2 emissions:

This Autologic office air conditioning heat-pump system took around half an hour to heat fully but once warm the outdoor heat-pump ramped down because the temperature had been reached therefore just pumping small amounts of heat in to maintain heat. The AOY90MPBMF is a heat recovery unit which mean it distributes heat taken from other areas of the building to areas requiring a larger heat load. Thinking of getting office Air conditioning??




Office Air conditioning recommendations.

When installing air conditioning in a office it is worth buying a quality unit. Cheaper units lack control features that commercial air conditioning systems have as standard. For example a 24Hr/7day timer so when your office is not occupied, the air conditioning is not running costing you money. Quality systems have superior mode settings for heat / cool / fan / dehumidify / auto. Cheap systems lack automatic feature which lets you set the temperature and the unit will change between heat and cool automatically which is important in office air conditioning systems. Most commercial office air conditioning systems have 3 years warranty and because they have a higher coefficient they usually have a ECA listing (air conditioning heat pumps only). Inverter units are recommended for daily usage.


Fixed speed or Inverter office air conditioning?


Inverter air conditioners are not new to the air conditioning industry having been around for +10 years now. The technology has now been miniaturised and manufacturing costs have fallen to make the technology more affordable for the air conditioning industry. An inverter air conditioning system controls the compressor electronically by altering the hertz (frequency). i.e - if the area to be air conditioned requires 50% power of the air conditioners compressor as it is close to reaching desired temperature, the invert will reduce the frequency to 25Hz (UK 50hertz ) thus running the air conditioner compressor at 50% without a need to shut the air conditioner compressor off. It makes for a air conditioner with close control on temperature and reduces electrical requirements by in some cases 60% as there is no inductive load. For server room air conditioning it is advised to use inverter air conditioning. The simple fact is that you will save within the first year of use the money you spent initially on the equipment. Hyper-inverter and power inverter air conditioning have cop's close to 5 time input power so they where possible should be used to reduce your electricity bill as well as CO2 usage.
