Case Study of Air conditioning Heat-pump installation at Autologic PLC Doncaster (21/12/10)

nstallation of Autologic PLC air conditioning heat-pumps :

Orion air conditioning & refrigeration ltd complete the installation of a Fujitsu VRF air conditioning heat-pump heating system for the 2 storey office building in Doncaster Yorkshire. Autologic Doncaster is a 1950's building made of a concrete structure with 14 areas which needed heating. The building had around 400 meters/Squared of area that used a oil fired convector heating system which was costing a great deal to maintain and was in need of replacing.

What air conditioning heat-pumps were installed in Autologic Doncaster:

8 x Fujitsu ASYA09-LG Wall Mounted Air conditioning (2.5Kw / 8500Btu) and 4 xFujitsu ASYA12-LG Wall Mounted Air conditioning (3.5Kw / 12000Btu) 6 x Fujistu AUYF12L Compact Cassette Air conditioning ( 3.5 kW / 12000 Btu) VRF Air Conditioning units running on 2 x AOY90MPBMF (31 kW / 100000 Btu) VRF Heat pump condensing unit which provided enough heat for the 14 areas on 2 floors within the building. These units have a high COP (3.65 initial input on) which means that every 1000w of electrical energy going in produces 3650 watts of heat. For more information on heat-pump inverters please here.

Background of the Autologic air conditioning heat-pumps:

Autologic were quoted on various heating systems including split heat pump systems and a replacement oil fired boiler which came in over budget in comparison to the price of the Fujitsu VRF air conditioning Heat-Pump units which where installed. The Fujitsu VRF air conditioning heat-pump system provided a great value way of heating a office building within a short space of time (30 mins heat up time) and with little cost and reduces CO2 emissions. A VRF air conditioning (variable refrigerant flow) system is one large capacity heat pump outdoor unit supplying multiple indoor units by regulating the flow of refrigerant to each unit to match desired capacity and heat load requirement. The Autologic Doncaster project 2 floor office required individual heating and cooling for each areas so a 3 pipe VRF system was required. The 3 pipe VRF air conditioning is also a heat recovery unit so all heat is collected from areas requiring cooling and distributed to areas requiring heating. This is particulay usefull if one side of the building is south facing and gets a lot of heat from the sun.

Heat-pump installation criteria:

This Autologic Office air conditioning heat-pump installation was undertaken by lead VRF air conditioning engineer Mr G Toth with assistance from installation engineer Craig Fogarty and Miles Taylor. All pipe and services were installed on the outside of the building on cush clamp pipe fittings at the back of the office building. The office air conditioning heat-pump units have a life span of around 15 to 25 years depending on their use. Installation time 20 days.

Office air conditioning VRF Heat-pump efficiency and CO2 emissions:

This Autologic office air conditioning heat-pump system took around half an hour to heat fully but once warm the outdoor heat-pump ramped down because the temperature had been reached therefore just pumping small amounts of heat in to maintain heat. The AOY90MPBMF is a heat recovery unit which mean it distributes heat taken from other areas of the building to areas requiring a larger heat load. Orion air conditioning and refrigeration Ltd have completed a project forKenco Techniques, Bedfordshire the manufactures of Formula 1 racing engine and body parts for Red Bull F1 and many other racing teams. The Fujitsu air conditioning AOY80 multi outdoor unit was connected to 4 indoor units for one wing of the building. Orion air conditioning and refrigeration Ltd completes the installation of 7 Mitsubishi air conditioning SCM multi-systems at Hevey Building Supplies www.hevey.co.uk , Northampton’s youngest, yet largest Independent Builders Merchant. Established in 2001. The Mitsubishi SCM multi air conditioning units. This included 1 x SCM80-ZF outdoor multi inverter unit connected to 3 x SKM25-ZF wall mounted wall units that can heat and cool. The inverter outdoor air conditioning unit can run at a very low energy input and can produce a COP of 4. That means four times the power input. The other area had a SCM80ZF outdoor multi air conditioning inverter unit with 4 x SKM35ZG wall mounted units.

Installation of Somerby Church air conditioning heat-pumps:

Orion air conditioning and refrigeration ltd were asked to look into the installation of a new church air conditioning heat-pump heating system for the All Saints Church,Somerby, Leicestershire (The first of its kind in England). All Saints church is a beautiful 13th Century Church with great architecture set in the picture postcard village of Somerby Leicestershire, UK. The church had around 200 meters/Squared of area that used a oil fired hot air system which had now failed and beyond economical repair. All Saints church Somerby was in need of a economical and green way of heating.

What air conditioning heat-pumps were installed in the church:

Units we installed include the 5 x Mitsubishi Heavy Industrial - SRK63ZE-S1 Wall Mounted (6.3kW 21000 Btu) HYPER-INVERTER, 1 x Mitsubishi Heavy Industrial SRK40-HGS Wall Mounted (3.7 kW 13000 Btu) Fixed speed and 1 x Mitsubishi Heavy Industrial SRK20ZGX-S (2.8 kW / 9000 Btu) HYPER-INVERTER Air Conditioning units which provided enough heat for the entire building. These units have a amazing COP (5.45 initial input on SRK20-ZGX) which means that every 1000w of electrical energy going in produces 5450 watts of heat. Background of the church air conditioning heat-pumps:

Parish church councillor Fuad Hamzeh was quoted on various heating systems including wet systems such as radiators and oil fired boilers which came in almost four times the price of the Mitsubishi Heat-Pump air conditioning church units which where installed. The Mitsubishi heat-pump air conditioning systems provided a great value way of heating a beautiful old church within a short space of time and with little cost and also reduces CO2 emissions.

Church air conditioning Heat-pump efficiency and CO2 emissions:

This church air conditioning heat-pump system, because slightly undersized for the area took around half a hour to heat fully but once warm the outdoor heat-pump inverter units slowed down because the temperature had been reached therefore just pumping small amounts of heat in to maintain heat. The 200msq area was consuming 15 Amps on 1phase 240V supply. This works out to be around 25p/hour to heat this huge area and reduced CO2 emissions by at least 60%..

Heat-pump installation criteria:

This church air conditioning heat-pump installation was undertaken by lead engineer Arron Denton with assistance from installation engineer Craig Fogarty, (both employed and trained by Orion). Because the church is grade 1 listed extra care was needed to keep the integrity of the building in line with planning applications and keep the history of the church intact. All pipe and services were installed on the outside of the building on cable tray at the back of the church and white plastic trunking within the building at low level (see BBC TV coverage for over view) which was later painted to fit in with the church colours. The church air conditioning heat-pump units have a life span of around 15 to 25 years depending on their use. Installation time 14 days.

Conclusion of the All Saints Church air conditioning Heat-pump:

The installation was blessed on the 23rd March 2009 by the Bishop of Leicester the Right Rev Tim Stevens on his 2009 tour of the diocese and the event was televised on a BBC TV channel on the 24th March.

The general consensus was that All Saints Somerby must be the warmest church in England!!!!.
