Independent Review Of The Panasonic Etherea Air Conditioning Wall Mounted Heat Pump Inverter





The Panasonic Etherea air conditioning wall mounted unit was introduced in 2016 with its sweeping curved looks and matt white finish, soon after in November 2017 the Etherea won the iF Design Award which considers products on their aesthetic looks, environmental impact, control features and overall industry design innovations. An amazing achievement for Panasonic no doubt and not surprising when I recently installed one for the first time I have to say the indoor unit impressed me. The curved design of indoor unit throws shadows down the side of the air conditioning unit giving it interesting visual look with different lighting angles. The Panasonic Etherea offers the usual wall mounted air conditioning features other manufactures offer such as heating, cooling, inverter compressor and internal IR remote control but with some really nice added options as standard, one of them the Econavi eye.

Thge Econavi feature is an in-built human activity sensor with sunlight detection technology which adjusts the internal units output thereby giving the user the best comfort at anytime whilst saving energy. Econavi not only optimizes air flow orientation and volume according to human presence, it also reduces cooling power automatically when not required. With Econavi, energy savings of up to 38% are possible, whilst increasing comfort. 

Nanoe Air Purifying System


The Nanoe revolutionary air-purifying system on the internal unit utilities nano technology fine particles to remove and deactivate 99% of both airborne and adhesive micro-organisms like bacteria, viruses and mold making it idea for allergen sufferers.

R32 Gas, Environmentally Friendly And Future Proof


The Etherea also run on environmentally friendly R32 refrigerant which has become industry standard in the last couple of years (2016-2018) ,a guarantee that the unit will be parts serviceable for the foreseeable future. 


Installation of the Ethera is straight forward with loads of space within the indoor unit


From an installation point of view the indoor unit has loads of space to work within the case, the electric box is huge as is the cable gully making it easy to access and install cables. The pipe services can be easily flared onto the internal unit with space left over for a small condensate pump within the case even. The unit is powered to the internal unit as with all Panasonic Split systems which is good for some installations. The only issue with a curved unit design such as the Etherea is that a side fitted condensation pump such as a Mini_lime pump will not fit as standard to the side of the unit. Not that most installers or users would spec a curved unit with that style of condensate pump anyway. 






The outdoor unit has a large electrical panel with large cable clamps with ease of installation well thought out. The cable and pipe covers has three screws to hold in place not the usual 1 with basic manufactures. The outdoor unit is quiet and well built with the fan and compressor not giving off that high frequency squeal associated with cheaper insulated compressors or fan bearings. 







Final Overview 

The Etherea range has six different capacities ranging from 2Kw/8000Btu up to 7Kw/24000Btu, with a A+++ efficiency rating in both heating and cooling, these models are some of the most efficient on the market.

People consider air conditioning to be a generic piece of equipment that will work on any continent, a plug in and use device in many cases. The truth is that many air conditioning manufactures have a continental classification for their systems. Where some air conditioning manufacturers deal with sales on a global level it is essential that air conditioning comes equipped with the relevant devices to match the continent it serves I.e: If a air conditioning system is used in Northern Europe it will have to be equipped with to cope with the harsh winters.

Northern Hemisphere

Generally air conditioning for Western Europe, North Europe, North America are equipped with a protective and aquatic jacket around the compressor or a crank case heater. This is to protect the compressor from harsh frosts of winter when the unit may not be on for many months. If used for heat pump purposes then it must be able to produce heat in sub-zero temperatures. Most manufactures rate their equipment down to -15DegC for winter heat production. Sanyo did produce a CO2 system that was rated to work at -25DegC but it was to expensive to be popular. For the above continental regions most air conditioning heat pumps are rated at ambient temperature of 38DegC cooling and -15DegC heat pump function.

Africa and Southern Hemisphere

In Africa and the Middle east where temperatures can sour above 40 DegC the main players on the global air conditioning market (Daikin air conditioning and Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning) have rated their equipment to 45 DegC to cope with the heat. For this region the average  year round temperature is around 17 DegC with obvious highs and lows. The Air conditioning system has the extremes of weather to cope with.

Popular European Brands


Popular air conditioning brands in Europe are Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin and LG with little impact from the US brands except for commercial equipment such as roof top chillers (Trane and Carrier). There are the cheaper split type systems which are Chinese manufactured and come with no protection for winter or high temperature environments. These systems are generally low quality and past experience shows they have a life span of around 7 years.

Buy air conditioning systems that match your climate and continental requirements. If you are using air conditioning in extremes of weather only use a quality manufacturer. The budget systems have no protection so are only good for occasional use.

Heat Pumps provide effective and controllable heating, whilst consuming up to 80% less power

Air conditioning being solely for cooling is a common misconception, as virtually all of today's air conditioning systems feature heat pumps which can heat as well as cool to provide total year round comfort.

This heating facility is not achieved through the use of conventional, power hungry electric heating elements, but instead through the use of highly energy efficient reverse cycle (heat pump) technology. In simple terms Heat Pumps provide effective and controllable heating, whilst consuming up to 80% less power than any other form of electrical heating.

Most of our commercial air conditioning and domestic air conditioning systems have the option of heat pump technology. All systems that include heat pumps can both heat and cool which results in less initial investment and greater simplicity for operation and maintenance. Unlike fossil fuel based systems, heat pumps extract available heat from the outside air resulting in Heat pumps offering efficiency gains of 3:1 and higher, compared to electrical heating.

Altherma is the commercial name given to the Daikin air source air-to-water heat pump system. The Daikin Altherma system is designed to replace conventional fossil fuel boilers (Gas/LPG/Oil/direct electric) to providing 3-5 times more energy efficient heating and hot water to family homes. For use with vented and unvented systems.
The Daikin Altherma is ideal for home and small commercial applications. The system comprises of a outdoor heat-pump which collects the heat from the outside air and transfers it to the indoor heat exchanger. Highly efficient and adaptable the Daikin Altherma will save money and CO2.

The Daikin Altherma can be easily intergrated with a solar collector which is positioned south facing on the outside of the building for heating the domestic hot water. There is no specific panel required by Altherma which makes it adptable for use with most solar collectors. The sun can provide 30 to 70% of the energy required for our hot water needs.



With space and water heating representing 85% of UK residential energy consumption, replacing conventional central heating boilers with Daikin Altherma air to water heat pumps is the single largest contribution householders can make towards reducing carbon emissions.


Even at a temperature of -20°C, Altherma can still generate heat. At these extreme conditions the Daikin Altherma can supply additional heat by means of an electrical back-up heater. On an annual basis, the heat pump itself will still supply 90 to 95% of your heating requirements.


Domestic hot water tank

The water inside the storage tank is primarily warmed up by thermal energy from the outside air, thanks to a heat exchanger connected to the heat pump. An additional electrical heating element in the domestic water tank can take care of extra heat required in the shower, tub or sink. At necessary intervals the water is automatically heated to 70°C to prevent bacteria growth.

EKHBH016AB (Indoor Boiler Unit). With Daikin Altherma you can enjoy delightfully warm and perfectly safe water at all times. Depending on your daily consumption of hot water, Altherma domestic hot water tanks are available in three different sizes, with the largest one being the most efficient. These sizes are 150 ltr, 200 ltr and 300 ltr which can be selcted at the top of this page.

How does it work?
The Daikin Altherma heat pump system extracts low grade thermal energy (at ambient temperature) from the environment (heat freely available in outside air), upgrades the heat to a higher temperature and releases it into the water running through your central heating system with low temperature radiators, under floor heating system or fan coil units.

Hitachi Air Conditioning Group has added a compact single fan unit to its range of Yutaki-M air-source heat pumps.

It incorporates all of the leading energy-efficient and cost-effective benefits of the MCS-approved Yutaki-M range and is only 800 mm high. Yutaki-M converts 1 kW consumption into 4 kW output and is capable of producing water temperatures of up to 60 deg C.

Air Conditioning energy efficiency has never been more important

Energy efficiency has never been more important. Every business has a need for it, every government has an agenda for it, and every vendor wants to tell you how they build it into their products. As manufacturers of some of the most efficient air-conditioning units on the market, Fujitsu knows more than most about energy efficiency. But it occurred to us that it is not just about the products. Every installer, specifier, contractor and architect is now expected to help tenants and users to get the most efficient use out of their air-conditioning systems. And there are a number of ways in which efficiency can be improved. So we have put together a short summary of the key factors that can affect the efficiency of your air conditioning. If this is the first time you have really considered this issue, we hope this will be a really useful guide and perhaps something of an eye opener to how energy efficiency works in the air-conditioning world. On the other hand, if you are an experienced HVAC practitioner, you will nevertheless appreciate a checklist to make sure you are covering every option and achieving the best levels of efficiency for your customers.
Energy efficiency can be impaired or improved (depending on your viewpoint) by a number of factors, including the following:


1. Planning ahead

It is always worth ‘planning ahead’ when considering the air conditioning of a space. Is it going to be for open plan usage or will it be zoned at a later date?
Where will the equipment be sited?
What is the future usage going to be?
Consideration of all these points will assist in selecting the right air-conditioning equipment for the application intended. Smaller ducted units will allow for future zoning of the space, whereas cassette type indoor units will restrict this. Spare a thought for the location of the indoor and outdoor units since excessive pipe runs should be avoided as a severe drop off in performance will be experienced. If considering the use of heat recovery VRF systems, try and create a balance of indoor
units that require heating with that of indoor units requiring cooling, in addition to giving consideration to building diversity. Always provide suitable service access for engineers to carry out effective system maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.


2. Selection/sizing

Correct sizing and selection of air-conditioning equipment is key to achieving optimum energy efficiency. Over-sizing in itself doesn’t render the system operationally inefficient. However, increased power consumption over the lifetime of the system can prove otherwise. Alternatively, under-sizing the system can result in excessive operation during normal system lifetime and can cause premature failure. Of course, where possible, select A/A rated equipment with the latest in DC inverter technology. Ensure consideration is given to using the correct UK design criteria when choosing equipment, as nominal capacities normally quoted within manufacturers’ literature can result in the incorrect sizing of the equipment. It is also important to adhere to the manufacturers’ recommended pipe sizes and maximum pipe lengths as system capacity will reduce significantly if these are exceeded


3. Control/set point


The most energy-efficient air conditioning systems installed in any application can be rendered energy inefficient if not controlled in the correct manner. Most of today’s control options can greatly increase the efficiency of an air-conditioning system. Control of operation times and set-point temperatures are the most basic and fundamental of control functions that will enhance system efficiency. However, depending upon size and type of air conditioning system installed, more sophisticated
control systems should be considered so that additional functions such as ‘night set back’, centralised set-point control and occupation detection facilities can be utilised to improve operation. It is always worth asking users how they expect to use the space that is to be air conditioned. Also consider options available on air conditioning systems, such as Energy Saving and Economy modes. Always be aware of the competition by users to either have the maximum heating temperature set point compared to the lowest cooling set point. Centralised control should be considered for this instance as constant adjustment of the set point will only result in erratic operation of the system and a reduced level of efficiency, not to mention the most
uncomfortable conditioned space. Finally, avoid the possibility of independent systems ‘fighting’ against each other whilst in different operating modes, ie one system heating whilst another is cooling in the same space.

4. Refrigerant charge

Paying attention to refrigerant charge is important for any air-conditioning system. Undercharging will result in the starvation of refrigerant within the system, in turn reducing the ability of the refrigerant to absorb the required amount of energy to satisfy the heating or cooling demand of the conditioned space. Operation times will subsequently increase and defrost cycles will become more frequent creating higher risk of system failure and reduced capacity and space temperature control. If a system is undercharged, always check for leaks within the pipe work and equipment and repair or replace as necessary before re-charging. Also be aware that some refrigeration systems may also be subject to routine leakage testing requirements
under the F-gas regulation (EC Regulation No. 842/2006 on Certain Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases).Frequently, these issues stem from poorly planned installation in the first place that make inspection and maintenance difficult or even impossible. If the filter or coils cannot be inspected or cleaned, the system’s efficiency will be dramatically reduced as the airflow across the coils becomes restricted. Over time this will result in costly repairs to the condenser as the compressor will inevitably fail.

5. Insulation

Poorly insulated and/or damaged insulation on pipe work breaks the vapour seal flowing condensation to form on the pipe. This condensation can soak into the insulation destroying the thermal insulation properties. The resulting exposed pipes will decrease the system’s efficiency. Many split system expansion devices are located in the outdoor unit and poorly insulated pipe work can affect the efficiency of the air conditioning system. Exposed pipes will act like a heat exchanger and absorb or reject energy before the refrigerant reaches the indoor or outdoor unit
reducing the performance of the air conditioning system. Always ensure pipe work insulation is of the correct quality and standard as recommended by the manufacture and/or in line with good refrigeration installation practice.

6. Servicing and access

Too often, system maintenance is neglected – and even the most efficient air-conditioning systems will not fulfil their operating potential if not serviced
regularly. Regular maintenance checks will ensure your air-conditioning system operates as efficiently as possible. Energy consumption can increase by as
much as 60% as a result of replacing poorly maintained or dirty components. Simple routine maintenance such as checking and cleaning fans, filters, coils/heat exchangers and any associated ductwork will maintain system efficiency.
Frequently, poor planning with regards to system location makes it impossible for service engineers to gain safe and suitable access to units on routine maintenance visits. Reference should always be made to the manufacturer’s recommendations to
location and service space requirements as detailed within installation and maintenance manuals.

7. Air distribution

Good air distribution is key to an effective and efficient air-conditioning system. Where applicable, particular attention must be paid to effective and correct ductwork design so as not to impair airflow over the system. Consider the distribution of air into the conditioned space. Avoid ‘dead zones’ and draughts as they may lead to the occupants using the controls erratically. Always consider the usage of the space
and the furnishing within the space to avoid any possible ‘short circuiting’ of airflow.

8. Usage & the people factor

Understanding how and when to use your airconditioner is also a pre-requisite for energy efficiency. Basic functions such as fan speed and louvre angle can be adjusted to improve efficiency. Use external shading to reduce the amount of light/
heat entering a space, and louvres can be retrofitted to buildings to provide shade during summer whilst allowing lower winter sun to penetrate the area. Blinds can also be angled to reduce solar heat gains whilst reflecting light onto walls and ceilings to reduce demand for electric lighting. While these are all things you can do to boost efficiency, all this work can be undone by the ‘human factor’ – ie if occupants leave doors and windows open.

The answer is not usually to issue a set of rules, but to encourage staff involvement by demonstrating how they can be more in control of their own environment. Explain how thermostats operate and give guidance on recommended operating temperatures and on how to set heating or cooling units correctly. Display instructions on individual
units and ensure that remote controls are accessible. It has also been observed that where other energysaving measures are in place [eg PIR-activated lighting], users are more aware of their responsibilities and react by being less wasteful. This is more a people issue than a technical one, but vital to the overall performance and efficiency of a system.
