Air-conditioner companies are going through a bad sales patch because of the delay in the onset of summer this year. Companies such as Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Carrier face the prospect of selling a lower number of air-conditioners this year at 3.8 million units against the earlier estimate of about 4.5 million units. The room air-conditioner segment had grown 19 per cent in value terms and 13 per cent in volume terms in 2010-11 primarily driven by split ACs.


The missed targets in all probability will eat into revenues and profit margins. While most of these companies fought shy of admitting any impact of the late summer on their sales and margins, LG has revised downward their sales targets.

“Sales of ACs start from March and peak by April. So far, the summer has not hit a high and this is reflected in our compressor business. Generally, 45 per cent of air-conditioners are sold during April-May. Given the fact th­at April is almost over, we are may not grow more than 8 per cent over 2010 sales. Earlier, we were expecting 35 per cent growth in sales,” national sales head of LG Electronics Amitabh Tiwari told Financial Chronicle.

“This season has certainly been bad for AC sales but weather conditions are similar in other Asian markets too. Our management is aw­are of the slowdown in the compressor business,” he said. LG clocked Rs 2,400 crore from AC sale in 2010.

“The overall AC industry is witnessing a drop of 30 per cent in terms of sales,” said head of sales & marketing of Panasonic India, Suresh Ba­ndi. But he is optimistic that a few good summer days are enough to make up for the lost business. He pointed to similar pleasant weather co­nditions in 2006 that led to sluggish sales in the first part of summer, but saw a pick-up in sales subsequently.

Though not many firms were transparent on their sales numbers, they were unanimous about a near-w­ashout this season. “The se­ason has not picked up even though we are nearing end-April,” said director, marketing & strategy, Carrier India, Krishan Sachdev. “But we are still hopeful and it is too early to comment on sales targets. As we operate in both the residential AC segment and institutional sales, we are able to balance our business,” he said.

Samsung too has witnessed a slowdown in AC sales this year. “Sales have not picked up so far due to the weather conditions. Ho­wever, it is too early to decide anything regarding targets,” said the deputy MD of Samsung, Ravinder Zutshi.

Temperatures in April in Punjab, Haryana and most parts of north-west India have been three to five degrees Celsius below normal. However, the heat has picked up in western and eastern India and also over the central India plains in the last few days, IMD bulletin said on Wednesday.

“The heat will pick up by May. The build-up of snow and La Nina have contributed to higher rainfall and a cooler landscape attracting western disturbances. This would wear off and summer would start peaking soon," director general of IMD Ajit Tyagi said.

LG's VRF Air Handling Unit (AHU), integrated control system lets users manage air conditioning for an entire building. The AHU provides outstanding heating, cooling and outdoor fresh air conditioning while saving energy. These AHU's can be used for 100% fresh air application or re-circulating air application. Based around these advanced solutions, LG plans to aggressively expand its market share in MEA commercial air conditioning this year.

With the establishment of a full line-up of air conditioning systems, LG is planning to evolve into a total solution provider for the MEA market. Through heavy investment, LG has built up its technical capabilities, by constructing a custom-built AC Academy at Jebel Ali which has been LEED Silver certified ,where LG is customizing products to the needs of MEA consumers. LG air conditioning aims to maintain top market share in MEA, targeting 15,000 unit sales in GCC

According to GFK, a global market research group, LG currently holds the lead position in major countries across the MEA with a market share of approximately 30%, giving it the largest monthly market share in MEA. The company is looking to further consolidate its position by securing a larger chunk of mid- to high-income consumers, who typically place a premium on technology.

With the very latest air conditioning technology offering even and powerful cooling, LG is targeting the GCC markets with the aim of securing the sale of 15,000 units with a product that is dynamic, powerful and efficient.

Multi V Systems, the latest commercial air conditioning innovation from LG Electronics, to be installed at the Arab Islamic Bank in Irbid, according to an agreement recently signed by Shami & Hyari Engineering & Contracting Co., the complex construction company, and Al-Asalah Electromechanics Co, LG commercial air conditioning agent in Jordan. This fruitful cooperation is part of LG's strategy to expand in the central air conditioning market, especially in systems that better serve the commercial sector, in addition to its keenness to provide products of latest techniques and the highest international quality standards.

LG air conditioning to introduce a multi-million Air Conditioning Academy East Africa

The University of Nairobi has partnered with LG to introduce a multi-million Air Conditioning Academy East Africa.

Launched last week in Nairobi, the half a million US-dollar academy will present a structured channel for imparting advanced knowledge and new expertise in installation and maintenance of air conditioning system.

"The Academy fills an existing gap of training institutions in this field in Africa and will adequately equip professionals in the region with advanced technology in air conditioning," said LG Executive Vice President Teddy Hwang.

"Heating and cooling technology is developing fast and as a result, it is vital that the industry stays up-to-date with the latest developments," said Mr Hwang.

Practical skills

"We hope to promote and develop the skills that the air conditioner, heating and plumbing industries need to stay ahead of the game through the academy."

The LG Air Conditioning Academy will enrol engineers, air conditioning installers, developers, owners, investors and air conditioning salesmen.

Trainees will apply for courses that run for between 1-3 days depending on the subject of the training. Mr Hwang says the academy will admit trainees from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and other parts of Africa.

Mr. Hwang said the LG Air Conditioning Academy would provide the newest product information as well as offers practical ways of learning by providing trainees with actual samples.

LG Air Conditioning saw worldwide sales increase by 50.5% in the last quarter of 2010, compared to the same period in 2009. Full year sales reached $4.2bn, 12.2% higher than 2009.

Significant growth was experienced in Middle East, Africa, Central and South America and stronger overseas commercial ac sales.

The Korean manufacturer also confirmed that it would not be making a bid for US air conditioner manufacturer Goodman Global despite being approached by San-Francisco-based private equity firm Hellman & Friedman. Japanese manufacturer Daikin is still considering making a bid.

The term air conditioning can actually refer to any form of air cooling, heating, ventilation or disinfection that changes the condition of the air.
