Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. (YGE) said it expects to report a surprise drop in shipments for the first quarter

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. (YGE) said it expects to report a surprise drop in shipments for the first quarter from the fourth quarter because of subsidy policy changes in Italy, joining other companies in the solar-energy sector that have warned of disappointing results in recent days.

The Italian government announced in early March that it planned to reduce feed-in tariffs for solar power systems and disclosed the final policy early this month, a move that has weighed on companies across the sector. At the same time, severe winter weather conditions in Germany also had a negative effect on market demand in the period, Yingli said.

The company said shipments in the period likely decreased by a low teen percentage from the fourth quarter, compared with the previous estimate for a mid-single-digit increase. Gross margin is projected at 27% to 27.5%, down from the earlier estimate of 30% to 31%.

Yingli said it expects to deliver certain of the delayed orders in the second quarter and estimates that shipments in that period will increase by more than 30% from the first quarter.

Shares of the company, which expects to report results May 20, slipped 2.2% to $11.11 in premarket trading; they are up 15% so far this year.

Air conditioning companies unlikely to hit sales targets in 2011 because of slow summer

You are here » Home » My Brands
Firms likely to miss AC sales targets this season

By l Apr 20 2011 , New Delhi

Air-conditioner companies are going through a bad sales patch because of the delay in the onset of summer this year. Companies such as Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Carrier face the prospect of selling a lower number of air-conditioners this year at 3.8 million units against the earlier estimate of about 4.5 million units. The room air-conditioner segment had grown 19 per cent in value terms and 13 per cent in volume terms in 2010-11 primarily driven by split ACs.

The missed targets in all probability will eat into revenues and profit margins. While most of these companies fought shy of admitting any impact of the late summer on their sales and margins, LG has revised downward their sales targets.

“Sales of ACs start from March and peak by April. So far, the summer has not hit a high and this is reflected in our compressor business. Generally, 45 per cent of air-conditioners are sold during April-May. Given the fact that April is almost over, we are may not grow more than 8 per cent over 2010 sales. Earlier, we were expecting 35 per cent growth in sales,” national sales head of LG Electronics Amitabh Tiwari told Financial Chronicle.

“This season has certainly been bad for AC sales but weather conditions are similar in other Asian markets too. Our management is aware of the slowdown in the compressor business,” he said. LG clocked Rs 2,400 crore from AC sale in 2010.

“The overall AC industry is witnessing a drop of 30 per cent in terms of sales,” said head of sales & marketing of Panasonic India, Suresh Bandi. But he is optimistic that a few good summer days are enough to make up for the lost business. He pointed to similar pleasant weather conditions in 2006 that led to sluggish sales in the first part of summer, but saw a pick-up in sales subsequently.

Though not many firms were transparent on their sales numbers, they were unanimous about a near-washout this season. “The season has not picked up even though we are nearing end-April,” said director, marketing & strategy, Carrier India, Krishan Sachdev. “But we are still hopeful and it is too early to comment on sales targets. As we operate in both the residential AC segment and institutional sales, we are able to balance our business,” he said.

Samsung too has witnessed a slowdown in AC sales this year. “Sales have not picked up so far due to the weather conditions. However, it is too early to decide anything regarding targets,” said the deputy MD of Samsung, Ravinder Zutshi.

Temperatures in April in Punjab, Haryana and most parts of north-west India have been three to five degrees Celsius below normal. However, the heat has picked up in western and eastern India and also over the central India plains in the last few days, IMD bulletin said on Wednesday.

“The heat will pick up by May. The build-up of snow and La Nina have contributed to higher rainfall and a cooler landscape attracting western disturbances. This would wear off and summer would start peaking soon," director general of IMD Ajit Tyagi said.

FG EUROFRED is looking to increase direct sales of Fujitsu air conditioning

FG EUROFRED is looking to increase direct sales of Fujitsu air conditioning equipment in the UK, according to new sales director Tony Gittings.

The former LG general manager is driving sales for new firm FG Eurofred, formed following the merger of Fujitsu General UK and Eurofred UK to bring together Fujitsu General UK's distribution network with Eurofred UK's direct selling operation.

Explaining the new company's philosophy, Tony Gittings said "No major air conditioning brand can operate successfully in the UK without a direct sales operation. All the major manufacturers have gone, or will soon be going, in that direction. Leading consultants and larger end users with branches all over the country want to deal directly with a manufacturer.

"However, unlike other manufacturers, we are firm believers in the continued role of a strong distributor network, so we have decided to take the bold decision to develop both routes to market equally. There is room for both."

Addressing concerns voiced by FG Eurofred's distributors, he said "We don't want to compete for existing business. We will be targeting companies who don't currently purchase Fujitsu. But we must adapt to address changes in the marketplace."

The UK is the third largest ac market in Europe. In a market now dominated by direct sales of VRF, FG Eurofred have much to do since only 10% of Fujitsu sales are currently direct.

VRF accounts for nearly one third of total UK ac sales, 80% of which is through direct sales.

Tony Gittings said "Currently sales through our distributors are almost exclusively splits. So, by increasing our direct VRF sales through consultants and larger end users, we will hit our sales targets without damaging our distributors."

To support its distributor network, FGE is to make available to its distributors a figure equal to 1% of that distributor's Fujitsu sales for marketing purposes.

Panasonic Air Conditioning Best Selling Air Conditioning Company In Australia After Out Selling Fujitsu

EXCLUSIVE: Fujitsu invented the plasma TV, Panasonic took it to #1 in Australia, now Panasonic has snared Fujitsu’s air conditioning crown according to GFK data by taking over the #1 slot for retail sales of air conditioning.

Fujitsu invented the plasma TV, Panasonic took it to #1 in Australia, now Panasonic has snared Fujitsu's air conditioning crown according to GFK data by taking over the #1 slot for retail sales of air conditioning.

"We took over the #1 slot in the air conditioning market November 2010 and we have continued to grow share" said Panasonic CEO Steve Rust who believes that his Company now has a major advantage due to their recent acquisition of Sanyo.

"The air conditioning market in the future is going to be all about control. Utility Companies are now working with Federal Government and State Governments to introduce new ways to control air condition and in the future that may mean Utility Companies having the power to control air conditioning in both winter and summer".

"Both Panasonic and Sanyo have control technology that is specifically designed to help consumers lower the cost of running an air conditioning system, which is often the biggest contributor to power use on a grid. We have already had blackouts in Sydney and both power utilities and Governments are away of the issues associated with air conditioning use." Rust said.

"Utility Companies in Australia are already trialling control technology linked to air conditioning systems which in the future, they will be able to control when demand on the grid reaches a peak. Consumer running an air conditioner at 16 degrees may find it reset to 19 degrees and in winter the heating cut back" said Rust.
Rust said that while the 2010/2011 season for air conditioning sales in Australia had been "difficult" he claimed that he was confident that the Japanese Company could hold onto their market share.

"We are looking to expand our air conditioning operation as a result we are looking to hire additional people. We are looking to expand our commercial offering and the business we get via installers" he said.

He claimed that a move to merchandising installer's vans and the offering of marketing incentives had led to a surge in installers wanting to sell Panasonic air conditioning solutions.
According to GFK data Panasonic now has 25% of the Australian retail, air conditioning market.
