The importance of selecting air conditioning by continental regional

The importance of selecting air conditioning by continental regional (17/08/12) by Sean Handley Orion AC&R Limited

People consider air conditioning to be a generic piece of equipment that will work on any continent, a plug in and use device in many cases. The truth is that many air conditioning manufactures have a continental classification for their systems. Where some air conditioning manufacturers deal with sales on a global level it is essential that air conditioning comes equipped with the relevant devices to match the continent it serves I.e: If a air conditioning system is used in Northern Europe it will have to be equipped with to cope with the harsh winters.

Northern Hemisphere

Generally air conditioning for Western Europe, North Europe, North America are equipped with a protective and aquatic jacket around the compressor or a crank case heater. This is to protect the compressor from harsh frosts of winter when the unit may not be on for many months. If used for heat pump purposes then it must be able to produce heat in sub-zero temperatures. Most manufactures rate their equipment down to -15DegC for winter heat production. Sanyo did produce a CO2 system that was rated to work at -25DegC but it was to expensive to be popular. For the above continental regions most air conditioning heat pumps are rated at ambient temperature of 38DegC cooling and -15DegC heat pump function.

Africa and Southern Hemisphere

In Africa and the Middle east where temperatures can sour above 40 DegC the main players on the global air conditioning market (Daikin air conditioning and Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning) have rated their equipment to 45 DegC to cope with the heat. For this region the average  year round temperature is around 17 DegC with obvious highs and lows. The Air conditioning system has the extremes of weather to cope with.

Popular European Brands

Popular air conditioning brands in Europe are Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin and LG with little impact from the US brands except for commercial equipment such as roof top chillers (Trane and Carrier). There are the cheaper split type systems which are Chinese manufactured and come with no protection for winter or high temperature environments. These systems are generally low quality and past experience shows they have a life span of around 7 years.

Summery

Buy air conditioning systems that match your climate and continental requirements. If you are using air conditioning in extremes of weather only use a quality manufacturer. The budget systems have no protection so are only good for occasional use.

LG Air Conditioning Academy, the first of its kind in the Middle East, has recently concluded its latest MultiV II

LG Air Conditioning Academy, the first of its kind in the Middle East, has recently concluded its latest MultiV II training course for a number of engineers from the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) and Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) at the InterContinental Hotel - Aqaba.

The Academy's choice to organize the training course, in which 25 engineers took advantage of, stems from its commitment to enhance the skill set of local engineers in all sectors, develop their practical knowledge and inform them of the latest technological advances in air conditioning systems. Moreover, the Academy also aims to invest such skills in the rich, unsaturated Aqaba market, as it requires a vast number of qualified staff that is familiar with the latest worldwide technologies.

Commenting on the course's conclusion was LG Air Conditioning Academy's Manager, Eng. Hussam Ebbini, who expressed, "We have chosen to conduct a course for Aqaba's engineers to enhance their practical experience and skills in air conditioning systems engineering. Aqaba is currently launching various investment and development projects that require highly-trained forces knowledgeable with the latest worldwide technologies. As the first of its kind in the Middle East, the Academy will continue to organize such courses to include the largest number of local and regional engineers."

The engineers expressed their delight at such an initiative, and Eng. Jaafar Al-Quoda from Aqaba Development Corporation expressed his admiration for the establishment such an Academy in Jordan, possessing years of expertise and engineering skills that are fit to compete on a worldwide level in the air conditioning engineering market. He also noted that the course has enabled him to enhance his engineering, academic and practical skills.

Furthermore, Engineer Ma'an Al-Fakara from the Aqaba Special Economic Zone stated that this course enabled him to know more about new high-end technologies such as LG's Solar System. He noted that the course is easy to understand and relies on practical applications, as it is conducted by engineers working in different sites.

It is worth mentioning that the LG Air Conditioning Academy has achieved massive success during its short period of operation and since its launch in April, 2010. The Academy has actively trained over 500 trainees from diverse sectors including students, engineers, contractors and consultants from Jordan and the Middle East. Moreover, the Academy's facilities include an exhibition for LG's latest air conditioning, lighting and solar energy products, in addition to a conference hall, a training room equipped with the latest LG MultiV equipment, and systems and networks that enable trainees to perform technical work efficiently.

LG air conditioning aims to maintain top market share in MEA, targeting 15,000 unit sales in GCC

According to GFK, a global market research group, LG currently holds the lead position in major countries across the MEA with a market share of approximately 30%, giving it the largest monthly market share in MEA. The company is looking to further consolidate its position by securing a larger chunk of mid- to high-income consumers, who typically place a premium on technology.

With the very latest air conditioning technology offering even and powerful cooling, LG is targeting the GCC markets with the aim of securing the sale of 15,000 units with a product that is dynamic, powerful and efficient.

The Titan can blast out cool air over a distance of up to 10 meters, the longest range of any air conditioner on the market today. The Jet Cool function and the 4-way Swing system enable the unit to blow cool air in practically any direction at maximum speed, making rooms cooler in the shortest possible time. Additionally, a special Multi-stage Tropical Compressor combines a highly efficient motor, minimized oil circulation and a specially designed resonator and cylinders to ensure powerful cooling even in extreme weather conditions.

To ensure the Titan provides customers with the most comfortable and refreshing environment, LG has added unique health features. LG's Air Purifying system is equipped with special filters that eliminate germs, capture harmful airborne viruses, and remove unpleasant odors. In particular, the plasma filter, which eliminates germs by burning microscopic dust particles through its patented electric field, represents the latest in LG's innovation.

LG Electronics (LG) is set to release the Titan, a premium residential air conditioning model, in the Middle East and Africa (MEA). This updated version of an already successful, high-tech LG air conditioner will deliver powerful cooling made to withstand the region's often punishing weather conditions.

The Titan is also built to last, an essential requirement in what can be an extremely hot region. The Multi-stage Tropical Compressor is designed to function, unhindered, for 24 hours a day, despite possible sandstorms and temperatures as high as 60°C. The Inbuilt Automatic Voltage Switcher helps the unit respond to unstable power supplies, while the Anti Corrosion Gold Fin coating makes the unit's heat exchanger more resistant to corrosion.

"The Middle East and Africa market is expected to be a huge market for the air conditioning industry, with demand for high-end models quickly rising," said Mr. H. S. Paik, President of LG Electronics Gulf FZE. "To make sure we stay the unquestioned leader of the AC market in this region, we're going to keep raising the bar for air conditioners that keep customers perfectly comfortable and cool, whatever the temperature outside."

The Titan will be released Across GCC region from March onwards.
