People consider air conditioning to be a generic piece of equipment that will work on any continent, a plug in and use device in many cases. The truth is that many air conditioning manufactures have a continental classification for their systems. Where some air conditioning manufacturers deal with sales on a global level it is essential that air conditioning comes equipped with the relevant devices to match the continent it serves I.e: If a air conditioning system is used in Northern Europe it will have to be equipped with to cope with the harsh winters.

Northern Hemisphere

Generally air conditioning for Western Europe, North Europe, North America are equipped with a protective and aquatic jacket around the compressor or a crank case heater. This is to protect the compressor from harsh frosts of winter when the unit may not be on for many months. If used for heat pump purposes then it must be able to produce heat in sub-zero temperatures. Most manufactures rate their equipment down to -15DegC for winter heat production. Sanyo did produce a CO2 system that was rated to work at -25DegC but it was to expensive to be popular. For the above continental regions most air conditioning heat pumps are rated at ambient temperature of 38DegC cooling and -15DegC heat pump function.

Africa and Southern Hemisphere

In Africa and the Middle east where temperatures can sour above 40 DegC the main players on the global air conditioning market (Daikin air conditioning and Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning) have rated their equipment to 45 DegC to cope with the heat. For this region the average  year round temperature is around 17 DegC with obvious highs and lows. The Air conditioning system has the extremes of weather to cope with.

Popular European Brands


Popular air conditioning brands in Europe are Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin and LG with little impact from the US brands except for commercial equipment such as roof top chillers (Trane and Carrier). There are the cheaper split type systems which are Chinese manufactured and come with no protection for winter or high temperature environments. These systems are generally low quality and past experience shows they have a life span of around 7 years.

Summery

Buy air conditioning systems that match your climate and continental requirements. If you are using air conditioning in extremes of weather only use a quality manufacturer. The budget systems have no protection so are only good for occasional use.

Air conditioning and heat pump thefts. Grand Jury hands down criminal indictments

Jamie Lee Lockhart, 30 Madison, one count theft by taking. In a separate matter Lockhart was indicted on one count theft by taking. Lockhart faces a third theft by taking indictment on another alleged theft. Warrants allege that Lockhart on October 1, 2010 took two heat pumps valued at $6,800 from a Sewell Church Road, Rutledge residence. A second warrant alleges that on February 3 Lockhart took used air conditioning parts from a Hightower Road location. A third warrant alleges that On October 1, 2010 Lockhart took a $1,500 heat pump from a Weaver Jones Road location.

Chadwick Mitchell Thomas, 32, Madison, one count aggravated stalking. Thomas was also indicted on one count theft by taking in an unrelated matter. Warrants allege that Thomas entered the property of a Hestertown Road man knowing that Thomas was under a temporary protective order to stay away from the man. A second warrant alleges that on February 14 Thomas took $10,000 worth of used air conditioning parts from a Hightower Road location.

Fuel Cell Micro CHP units have the edge over Air Source heat pump options


With the introduction over the next few years of the micro CHP unit based on fuel cells where the unit combines heating the building with electricity production the heating market is on the cusp of a whole new technology and combining of building trades.

The fuel cell units need a natural gas supply where the Air source heat pumps require electricity and produce heat from the outside air with operating ranges down to -20 DegC. In very cold weather they do have their limitations.

Ceramic Fuel Cells secures first USA of Bluegen

            
Ceramic Fuel Cells secures first USA sale 05/08/10    Major California utility to demonstrate  BlueGen Gas-to-Electricity Generator      Ceramic Fuel Cells Limited (AIM/ASX: CFU) - a leading developer of high  efficiency and low emission electricity generation units for homes and other  buildings - today announced its first BlueGen product sale in the United States  to one of the United States' largest energy companies.    Ceramic Fuel Cells will install a BlueGen gas-to-electricity generator at the  energy utility's engineering center in California. The BlueGen unit is scheduled  to be installed in September 2010.    Ceramic Fuel Cells' local partner, California-based Smart Hybrid Systems, Inc.,  will provide local installation and support services, including integrating the  BlueGen unit with thermal and electrical management systems as well as metering  equipment.  Smart Hybrid Systems, a US energy appliance manufacturer, also plans  to develop innovative hybrid fuel cell and energy storage products utilizing the  Ceramic Fuel Cells solid oxide fuel cell as the core generator of electricity  and heat. 
         BlueGEN   About the size of a dishwasher, BlueGen is the latest breakthrough in small  scale electricity generation.  BlueGen uses patented fuel cell technology to  convert natural gas into electricity and heat with very high efficiency.  BlueGen units can generate electricity at a peak electrical efficiency of 60  percent, far higher than any other technology in the large global market for  small scale electricity generation.  When heat is recovered for hot water, total  efficiency is up to 85 percent - twice as efficient as the current power grid. 
          By generating power close to where it is used, Ceramic Fuel Cells' products can  meet the future demand for low emission electricity without the need for huge  investments in electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure.    Brendan Dow, Ceramic Fuel Cells' Managing Director said: "It is a great  achievement for us to have made our first BlueGen sale in the United States, to  one of the largest utilities in the country.  Together with our existing sales  in Europe, Japan and Australia, this sends a strong message about the size of  the global markets that Ceramic Fuel Cells is targeting.  It is exciting for us  that large utilities not only in the USA but throughout the western world are  investing seriously in low-emission power generation."    Since late 2009 Ceramic Fuel Cells has secured orders for 50 BlueGen units from  other major utilities and foundation customers in Germany, Switzerland, The  Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia, including E.ON Ruhrgas  (the largest gas utility in Germany), the German Gas Association, and Osaka Gas  (the second largest gas utility in Japan).    Ceramic Fuel Cells is also operating fully integrated power and heating products  with leading energy companies E.ON UK (the second largest electricity retailer  in the United Kingdom), GdF Suez (the largest gas utility in France) and EWE in  Germany.
